In the middle ages the treadle lathes where of the pole variety.

This one is in the Mendel Housebook of 1436.

This picture is from 1568 and is a metal spinning lathe, the pots are in the fore ground, pewter i think.
The person in the back ground is driving it, He does not look like an apprentice?
