This company was started by Dr. Samuel Stockton White 

The name SS White is synonymous with dentistry in the United States. The glorious history of SS White Burs began in 1844 when Samuel Stockton White opened up his business in Philadelphia, PA.

The growth of SS White is directly related to Dr. White's determination to improve his chosen profession. He encouraged doctors to communicate ideas freely with him, resulting in many innovations and a business philosophy that is the foundation of the company, even today.

In 1874 Dr. Eli Starr first introduced high speed Flexible Shaft in S.S. White dental engines. He obtained US Patent No. 158,325 in 1874 for his invention. It was so successful that Dr. White continued to buy patents for further improvements in Flexible Shaft thereafter. He encouraged fellow dentists to improve their practices which created a market for tools and supplies he manufactured and sold.

They are still one of the biggest flexeble shaft manufacturers in the world today.
