He went to work for the firm Wood & Light & Co established 1848, this company made iron working Machinery, pulleys, shafting and hangers.
Working in the drafting room and also doing book keeping
In 1875 he bought a interest in the company A.F.Prentice Co,they where making hand and foot powered lathes, upright drill and other machinery.
A couple of years later he bought the entire company and started operating under his own name.
His leadership brought a rapid expansion and made the company the biggest Lathe makers in the world.
His forman John R. Black became a partner in 1891 and the firm added & Co to the name.
The company was as his peak in 1912 with 1000 workers.
