I picked up a Barnes 4-1/2 this morning off craigs list. There are a couple things on this lathe I have not seen before that came with the lathe. The first is the countershaft, it was fastened to an angle iron and wood bench which appeared to be owner made which was powered by an electric motor. It seems that the countershaft fits the 4-1/2 like it was made for it. Is it possible that the countershaft could be Barnes or was it an after market product made for Barnes? The second item are the two back gear covers. They fit like a glove and appear to be made for the lathe. Are these Barnes or after market? All input is appreciated.

In the 1907 catalog, Barnes offered counter shafts for all of their lathes. The counter shaft for the 4 1/2 was $15 as an extra, or could replace foot power for no price difference.
This shaft is also used for the Nr 4 and Nr 5

And for the 5-1/2 and Nr 13.

Also about the back gear cover.

From my research the industry started to think of safety around 1915. Some manufacturers started offering the back gear covers as options about this time. The 1915 Sears Blacksmith catalog reflects this.
