Athol machine Co

Athol Machine Co.

The Athol Machine Company was established in 1868 in order to manufacture a chopping machine invented by Laroy S. Starrett. In 1881, Mr. Starrett established the L. S. Starrett Company, known for making quality precision tools. The company remains the town’s largest employer to this day, and thus does Athol live up to the nickname “Tool Town.”

Athol Machine Co. existed until 1905 when it was acquired by Laroy Starrett. He had worked for them prior to that time and bought them out after a patent-infringement lawsuit he had filed against them was settled in his favor. Athol Machine Co. was better known for their machinists' hand tools, such as squares and calipers. Since this web site is restricted to woodworking machinery, we cannot provide any information on most of Athol's products. They are listed here because they made a grinder that can be used, among other things, for sharpening woodworking machinery cutters
